Chunk 3

In this chunk, Glassner discusses the misconception of black men. He adresses how the media makes it seem like all innocent bystanders have a chance of being killed in gang or drug violence. Coincidently black men have more of a chance of being killed than anyone. He addresses how white people always are made out to be the victim only because black murder victims are hardly ever recognized by police or the media. Glassner also points out the irony of how people look down at rap music, but rock music also has the same negative aspects but isn't looked down upon.
Glassner also weighs the problem of legal drugs being misused and how the government focuses all of their attention on the illegal drugs and the increase in heroin in everyday life: the new drug of choice. He assesses "roofies" and how society is so scared of the date rape drug. Basically he points out how if society is not scared of one drug then its another and how the cycle continues.

do you think rap is more looked down upon tyan heavy metal because rap is predominately black?

do you agree with the way glassner assesses whites being automatically the victim?

  1. Yes, I do think that rap is more looked down upon than heavy metal because rap is predominantly black. Our society is still racist and people still are prejudice against certain things like rap music.

  2. yes rap is more looked down upon than heavy metal because rap is the only thing that blacks can say is there own. Whites, or other races sterotype rap as bad beacuse they asume that blacks are criminals and corrupt and therefore our music is to.

  3. I do agree with Glassner'assessment of the "white victim" because even though this book was written before the new millenium, not much has seemed to change. If there is a story about a missing person or someone who dies a sudden tragic death, that person is always white, even though those kinds of things happen almost daily to people of other races.

  4. I think the media is more interested in white victims than in black because the media is more interested in their crimes and less in their suffering. The way the media conveys stories is to get more ratings against competing journalist stations and attract more viewers or readers.

  5. Of course I believe rap is down played/looked different at, because the fact that society is still racist and segregated. Even after all these years later nothing will change until society changes it will always be like this.
